Every workplace must have at least an appointed person. The number and level of first-aiders (EFAW or FAW) follow from a needs assessment covering risk level, headcount and remoteness from help: in low-risk settings, one EFAW first-aider per 25–50 employees; in higher-risk settings, more FAW-trained first-aiders.

The HSE accepts blended learning: theory may be delivered online, but an in-person practical assessment of skills is required. An annual skills refresher is recommended across the 3-year validity.
